Asset Classes and Service Duration
Asset Classes group Assets into hierarchical categories and define service durations used for budgeting.
Asset Classes and Service Duration
Asset Classes group Assets into similar categories for easier filtering and management. Every Asset must be categorized by an Asset Class.
Hierarchy
Asset Classes are hierarchical, with each child class a refinement of its parent. For example:
- Computers
- Desktop
- Laptop
All Desktops are Computers, but not all Computers are Desktops; Laptops and Desktops differ, but both are Computers. Keep the hierarchy manageable — don’t overcomplicate it. You can always add classes later as you need more refinement.
Service Duration
Each Asset Class has a service duration — the life expectancy of assets in that class. Service durations feed the Budgeting module’s refresh projections, so setting realistic values matters for accurate budgets.
Special Designations
ChromeOS Sync Default
Exactly one Asset Class can be tagged as the ChromeOS Sync Default and is marked with the ChromeOS icon. When you sync with Google, your Chromebooks are automatically added to this class — so designate a sensible one (for example a class called “Chromebooks”).
Printer Default
Exactly one Asset Class can be tagged as the Printer Default, marked with the printer icon. When enabled, every Printer Blueprint Modifier automatically creates a corresponding asset — a powerful way to keep printer inventory in sync. Right-click a class to set it as Printer Default; choose it again to deselect and turn the feature off.
Example Hierarchies
A fuller hierarchy for an organization tracking both technical and non-technical assets might include Tracked Assets → Fixed Assets (Automobiles, Heavy Equipment, Furnishings), Minor Inventory, and Technology (Classroom Tech, Compute Devices such as ChromeOSDevice/Desktop/iPad/Laptop, Printer, Projector or Smartboard). A small organization might start simply with Tracked Assets → ChromeOSDevice, Computer, Printer.
Common Questions
Can I change Asset Classes later?
Yes. Start reasonable and refine over time.
What is the ChromeOS Sync Default for?
It’s the class synced Chromebooks are automatically placed into. Designate a sensible one.
What does the Printer Default do?
It makes every Printer Blueprint Modifier auto-create a matching asset, keeping printer inventory current.
Why do service durations matter?
They drive the Budgeting module’s refresh projections.
