If your Chromebooks are not showing accurate location on the map, work through the two solutions below in order.
Solution 1: Confirm the ChromeOS Extension Is Installed
Location reporting depends on the Chromebook Management Assistant extension. If you have not already deployed it across your fleet, follow the ChromeOS Extension article to install it. A Chromebook will not report accurate location until it has run at least once with the extension installed.
Solution 2: Allow Geolocation in Google Workspace
You can force geolocation for Chromebooks through Google Workspace:
- Sign in to your Google Workspace admin account.
- Go to Device Management → Chrome Management → User Settings → Security → Geolocation.
- Select Allow sites to detect users’ geolocation from the drop-down.

Why is my Chromebook’s location blank or wrong?
Either the ChromeOS extension isn’t installed, or geolocation is blocked in Google Workspace. Check both.
Does the extension track personal Chromebooks?
No. It only runs on your organization’s managed Chromebooks.
