Best Practice Checklist
A bootstrap checklist to stand up a solid K12Panel configuration — sync, structure, groups, libraries, and your first deployment.
Best Practice Checklist
Use this checklist to bootstrap a solid K12Panel setup. Each item links conceptually to a deeper article; the order below is a sensible path from an empty org to your first real deployment.
The Checklist
- Initiate Google Sync (Settings → Cloud Sync).
- Deploy the Chromebook extension (Settings → Software Downloads).
- Create an Asset Class hierarchy that fits your organization.
- Create a Site hierarchy that fits your organization.
- Build at least one “All Assets” dynamic Asset Group.
- Build an Org Library for your Blueprints.
- Join the Public Library.
- Consider subscribing to the Managed Printers library.
- Subscribe to the recommended Team Blueprints.
- Configure a Modifier for each recommended Blueprint.
- Bind the new Modifiers to your “All Assets” dynamic group.
- Build a ReimageAny key, deploy an image to a PC, and get started.
Notes on Key Steps
Asset Classes and Sites can always be changed later, so start with something reasonable rather than perfect. Build your real site structure plus a “Test” area for trying Blueprints before fleet-wide rollout.
Dynamic “All Assets” group: create one dynamic Asset Group rooted at your top site so every asset is automatically included. You’ll add more groups over time.
Recommended Team Blueprints to Jump-Start an Org
- Windows Settings – Config: Base Registry Settings (accept the default properties)
- Windows Settings – Config: Toggle AutoAdminLogon (set $AutoLogon=“0” to disable auto logon)
- Windows Settings – MAK / Digital License Activation (enter your organization’s MAK)
- Windows Settings – Add Wireless Network (configure your SSID)
- Windows Settings – Config: Windows Update Install All on a Schedule (e.g. $Timespan=“7”, $reboot=“no”)
- Windows Settings – Create Local User Account and Set Password (e.g. a tech account with a strong password)
- Windows Settings – Synchronize Time via NTP
After subscribing, create a Modifier for each (supplying the properties above where needed), then bind all of those Modifiers to your “All Assets” dynamic group so they apply across your PC fleet.
First Deployment with ReimageAny
- Follow the in-app instructions to build a ReimageAny thumb drive (Tools → ReimageAny).
- Boot a PC from the drive and deploy the image (this wipes the PC).
- The PC appears on the On-Ramp — adopt it and assign a Site and Asset Class.
- Activate the PC, reboot, and watch your Modifiers run.
Common Questions
Can I change Asset Classes and Sites later?
Yes. Start reasonable; you can refine both at any time.
Why build an “All Assets” dynamic group first?
It auto-includes every asset, so binding recommended Modifiers to it applies them fleet-wide.
Where do the recommended Blueprints come from?
The Public Library — join it under Team Libraries, then subscribe under Team Blueprints.
Do all recommended Blueprints need properties?
No. Some are simple Modifiers with no properties; others (MAK, SSID, schedule) need values you supply.
